Description Experimental investigations carried out at the Structural Engineering Research Centre, Madras, on reinforced concrete beams having equal compression and tension reinforcement, and provided with stirrups or transverse steel in the form of lacing with or without steel fibre reinforcement have shown that a majority of these beams failed by rupture of the tensile steel, while the remaining few failed by the buckling of the compression steel . A mathematical model has been proposed to evaluate the failure rotations in such beams. The test results also reveal that the Ductility of flexural members reinforced symmetrically on the tension and compression faces maximum percentage strain reached in the compression bars was of the order of 6 percent with high percentages of confining steel.
