Description The relative economy of 800 KV tranmission line towers has been examined in detail. Three types of towers namely self-supporting, guyed-V and chainettee tower were indentified, designed and studied. Towers are of tangent type for single circuit line. These were designed for typical tender specification based on Indian codal provisions. Each tower was optimized for selected parameters and studied independently. The comparactive economy of the three towers has been presented. The comparision included material weight, fabrication, erection, foundation and land costs. Suitability, merits and demerits of each tower have been discussed. The material savings against rigid tower is 57% for guyed-V tower and 67% for chainette tower. The chainette tower is more economical than guyed-V tower in terms of materials saving (22%). based on the overall cost, study showed that chainette tower is 39% more economical than self supporting tower and 13% more economical than guyed tower.
