Description The existing low/medium-rise buildings(less than six-storeys and 40m height) designed as per the then prevailing codes of practice are required to be retrofitted to comply with the base shear requirement of present seismic code (IS:1893-2002). This paper gives an estimate of the additional shear as per this code for which existing buildings need to be provided with retrofit measures based on the seismic zone, site soil condition and importance factors to be considered at the location of the building, the type of frame and type of foundation considered in design phase of the building.
