Description Extensive damage to communication system, telephone and lighting poles has been reported during cyclones. In addition to structural damage, the service life of the lamp/luminaries system is adversely affected by large amplitude of vibrations of the lamp masts. This paper suggests a procedure for obtaining dimensions for lighting poles based on the criterion that the energy content in the wind spectrum is less, beyond 1.25 Hz. The depth of foundation embedment of poles suggested in the relevant Indian Standards has been critically evaluated. This paper also suggests a method for obtaining the dimensions of the foundation based on wave propagation in non-homogeneous soil media. A detailed numerical design of a reinforced concrete lighting pole has been included to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed design approach.
