Description The main aim of this paper is to demonstrate the usefulness of Artificial Neural Network (ANN) in the creation of knowledge base available in the form of design standards. As an example, in this paper, ANN is used for design of compression member. A new methodology is developed for arriving at optimum column section for the given effective length and compressive load using Artificial Neural Network simulation. This methodology facilitates in quick selection of the section with minimum weight and adequate load carrying capacity is possible for column design from the available sections. The present method is developed for design of columns with hot rolled angle sections given in IS:808-1989. The steps involved in capturing the buckling equation of steel compression members in a feed-forward neural network and the same is used for design of a space truss. The developed model can be used in optimum design of towers/trusses
