Description |
The exhaust valve in question had failed by fatigue. No metallurgical or mechanical abnormalities were responsible for the fatigue crack initiation. From the observations, it appears most probable that the misalignment of the valve had led to bending and generation of circumferential cracks at the underhead stem region. One of these cracks might have propagated by fatigue under the fluctuating load leading to failure of the valve.
