Description Cr-WS2 nanocomposite coatings were deposited at different Cr contents (15-50 at.%) using an unbalanced magnetron sputtering system. Various techniques were used to study the structure, chemical composition, mechanical and tribological properties of the coatings. X-ray diffraction results of Cr-WS2 coatings indicated structural transition from a mixture of nanocrystalline and amorphous phases to a complete amorphous phase with an increase in the Cr content. Cross-sectional high resolution transmission electron microscopy studies revealed that Cr-WS2 coatings prepared at low Cr contents ( 23 at.%) exhibited a mixture of nanocrystalline and amorphous phases. Nanoindentation results indicated that addition of Cr helped in improving the mechanical properties of Cr-WS2 coatings. Microtribometer tests indicated that Cr-WS2 coatings prepared at low Cr contents ( 23 at.%) exhibited superior tribological properties at ambient conditions compared to WS2 coatings, both at low (2 N) and high (7 N) loads.
