Description |
A fractured aileron connecting rod installed on an aircraft was brought to the laboratory for analysis. The fracture surfaces were found extensively damaged due to post fracture impact. Scanning electron microscopic examination revealed that the connecting rod has failed by fatigue. Due to post fracture damage, the fractographic features were obliterated and hence the fatigue crack origin could not be determined. The connecting rod material was found to conform to drawing specification in terms of chemical composition, microstructure and hardness.
