Description Fractographic features revealed that the middle drum has failed by fatigue. Evidences suggest that the 3rd stage stator blades have rubbed against the middle drum at H3 zone. The rubbing was confined to a localized region of the drum wherein the material was subjected to cyclic stresses resulting in fatigue crack initiation with subsequent propagation leading to failure. No noticeable differences were observed in the microstructures of the samples taken from the failed and away from the failed regions. Also, no defects were observed in the weld adjacent to the fractured region. Analysis indicates that the local bulging of the middle drum occurred during the hot test. However, with the available information, it was not possible to determine as to what had actually caused this local deformation/bulging. The possibility of assembly stresses on H3 rim due to differential tightening of the corresponding bolts may be examined.
