Description |
A failed Tail Gear Box (TGB) housing of a helicopter was analyzed. Analysis showed that the gearbox failed by fatigue. Fatigue cracks initiated at the mounting lugs and propagated by low cycle fatigue. There were no metallurgical and/or mechanical abnormalities associated with fatigue crack initiation. Fatigue appears to be stress related. The possibility of excessive load/vibration on the TGB housings in question may be examined.
