Description |
The genus Vibrio is included in the division Protophyta, class Schizomycetes, order
Pseudomonales and family Vibrionaceae. The genus comprises several pathogenic
species including enteropathogenic V. cholerae and V. parahaemolyticus. V. cholerae can
be divided into several serogroups on the basis of their O-antigens. Strains belonging to
the O group 1 (O1) are, in general, responsible for the cholera epidemics. They are
divided into three further serotypes called Inaba, Ogawa and Hikojima. Furthermore, the
O1 serogroup is composed of two biotypes, classical and El Tor based on differences in
haemolysis, haemagglutination, polymyxin B sensitivity and phage resistance properties
(Fig. 2) [Strocher, 1992]. Strains other than O1 are collectively called non-O1 and are
known to cause only sporadic infections but do not have the potential to cause epidemics.
In early 90s, an outbreak in India and Bangladesh, which subsequently spread into
several parts of the sub-continent, was caused by a novel non-O1 strain, V. cholerae
