Description In India, kala-azar (Visceral leishmaniasis; VL) affects millions of people, and the state of Bihar accounts for nearly 90% cases, followed by West Bengal and Eastern Uttar Pradesh. Neighbouring countries like Nepal (Terai region) and Bangladesh also report a significant number of cases with VL(15). According to the existing medical records, in 1824 , the first Kala-Azar epidemic erupted in Jessore district of Bengal (presently in Bangladesh) when 45000 people died within three years. Kala-azar was often confused with Malaria. However from pathological sample two distinctly different species had been identified simultaneously by Leishman (18) and Donovan in India (19). R.Ross named the parasite (1903) as Leishmania donovani to honour the founders.
