Description This chapter deals with the indium trichloride catalysed synthesis of 2-pyrone derivatives. The 2-pyrone ring (2H-pyran-2-one), a six-membered cylic unsaturated ester is found in a number of natural products. They have been found to posses a broad-spectrum of biological activity. We observed that InCl3 could be effectively used for preparing different 2-pyrone derivatives 5. InCl3 catalyses (20 mol%) one-pot synthesis of 3-acetyl- 4-aroyl-6-aryl-2-pyrone derivatives 5 from diaroyl acetylenes 1 and ethyl acetoacetate (Scheme 3). Treatment of one equivalent of dibenzoyl acetylene 1a with one equivalent ethyl acetoacetate in the presence of catalytic amount of Indium trichloride (20 mol%) in i-PrOH at 80-90 ÂșC for 3h. resulted in 72% yield of 3-acetyl-4-benzoyl-6-phenyl-2- pyrone.
