Human skin is the large multilayered body surface-covering organ of the body, which creates barrier
between the internal organs and external environment. It regulates the heat and water loss from the
body and at the same time it gives protection against the external assaults of physical agents, noxious
chemicals and microorganisms. It amounts almost 10-15% of body weight and covers an average
surface area of 1.5-1.75 m2. Its thickness varies from 0.5 mm to 6 mm depending on the location; the
average is 1-2 mm (Canizares O, 1993). While covering the whole body, integrity of such a large and
easily accessible organ is essential to the well being of life.
