Description Evidences suggest that the cracks seen in the plunger elements are quench cracks. No metallurgical abnormalities were responsible for the crack formation. Examination showed that the composition, microstructure and hardness of the plunger element material conform to specification. From the available information, the exact reason for the quench crack formation could not be established. However, it is recommended to maintain the composition of the salt bath and the heat treatment parameters within the specification for a possible solution to the problem encountered.
