Description |
Out of the 41 blades referred to NAL, 36 blades have failed by fatigue. In all the blades, the fatigue cracks were similar in nature and they got initiated at the convex and/or concave surface of the airfoil just above the blade root platform. There were no metallurgical and/or mechanical abnormalities at the fatigue crack origins. The fatigue is stress related and of high cycle – low stress type. Failing of about 85% of the blades by fatigue is unusual and cannot happen unless there is wrong material selection and/or resonance in the blades.
