Description The centre support bevel gear of an aeroengine has failed by fatigue. The fatigue crack had initiated at the tooth root radius region, propagated progressively over about 70% cross section before culminating in an overload failure. Analysis shows that the ineffectiveness of the tab washers resulted in loosening of the bolts. This in turn resulted in misalignment of the gears and fatigue crack initiation in the bevel gear. No metallurgical and/or mechanical abnormalities were responsible for the fatigue crack initiation. The other damages observed are secondary in nature and subsequent to the primary failure in the bevel gear.
