Description The steam turbine blade has failed by fatigue. The fatigue crack had initiated at the leading edge and propagated progressively over about 80% of the blade cross section before giving rise to final overload failure. The fatigue is of high cycle – low stress type. The thickness of the blade at the leading edge was found to be less than that of the specification. This has resulted in high stress concentration at the leading edge of the blade leading to premature fatigue crack initiation. No metallurgical and/or mechanical abnormalities were responsible for the fatigue crack initiation.
