Description |
As a part of environmental assessment in the Mumbai Harbour region, where large numbers of ships either take in ballast from- or discharge their ballast, many groups of indicator and human pathogenic bacteria were quantified. Samples (water, sediment, marine plant and animal samples) collected during November 2001, April and October 2002 were examined for total coliforms and eight other groups of known human pathogenic bacteria. Higher levels of coliforms were recorded from the Mumbai Harbor area when compared with similar studies from other parts/harbors of the world in addition to the high abundance of human pathogens surveyed for during this study.
