Description |
The effect of progressive replacement of limestone by marble waste on the thermo-mechanical properties of a traditional earthenware wall tile composition has been studied. It was observed that the body mixes containing more than 7.5 wt % of marble waste showed a marginal decrease in dry strength and bulk density while particle size distribution were almost identical. The body mixes containing up to 7.5 wt % of marble waste showed improvement in fired properties in the biscuit firing temperature range of 1000 degrees to 1100 degrees C. A reverse trend was observed beyond this temperature range due to an increased proportion of high expansion residual quartz. The body mixes containing up to 7.5 wt % of marble waste was showed significant reduction in percent thermal expansion at 600 degrees C in the sample fired at 1100 degrees C. As a result, the body mixes become more thermal shock resistant compared to the reference body. The study concluded that marble waste can be added in small amounts (7.5 % or less) in earthenware wall tile improving their thermo-mechanical properties.
