Description The association between the El-Nino events over the Pacific and the Indian summer monsoon is one of the most enigmatic features in our climate system; while some El-Nino events are associated with drought over India, other, stronger El-Nino events, seem to have little effect. We show that the answer lies in another aspect of El-Nino that has received little attention. Analysis of long-period data shows that the SST maximum in the equatorial Pacific occupies one of two preferred locations: one around 170oE and the other around 185oE during an El- Nino event. As the atmospheric response to SST, like the location of induced convergence and divergence, strongly depends on the location of the SST maximum, this also results in a shift of various effects of El-Nino at a characteristic zonal scale. The location of the SST maximum exhibits a strong seasonal cycle with a sharp change in the May-June period. A combined effect of these features is a selective association between El-Nino and Indian summer monsoon. Our findings explain such anomalous behavior as lack of effect of strong El-Nino of 1997 on the Indian summer monsoon. Implications of our findings for the dynamics of El-Nino monsoon interaction as well as for prediction and model simulation are discussed.
