Description We report the fabrication of ytterbium (Yb)-sensitized thulium (Tm)-doped air-clad fibers for near-IR laser applications. The effect of change in the concentration ratio of Yb and Tm was studied using three such fibers, which were pumped with a 980 nm laser diode and subsequently characterized to test their lasing properties. Lasing at around the 2 mu m wavelength was obtained using a simple cavity design, and improved performance was seen for increased Yb: Tm ratio. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America
