Description Arsenic contamination in potable water derived from ground water has been reported in many regions of the world. About 40 and 75 percent of the area of West Bengal, India and Bangladesh, respectively, are exposed to the risk of arsenic contamination in ground water. Existing technologies for separation of arsenic from water primarily consist of chemical treatment followed by flocculation-sand filtration, fixed bed adsorption column containing granular adsorbent media or ion-exchange resins, high pressure RO, etc. Such techniques generate a larger volume of arsenic contaminated sludge/effluent, besides limitation in the level of arsenic and iron in the raw water. A low-pressure ceramic membrane-based process combining adsorption under fluidized condition and cross-flow filtration techniques was developed for simultaneous removal of arsenic and iron from highly contaminated ground water for production of quality drinking water as per WHO recommendation. Sustainability the novel technology for supplying safe drinking water has been established through installation of eighteen-community model of Arsenic & Iron Removal Plants (2,500-5,000 LPD) in West Bengal and North Eastern States of India during the last five years. Studies on characterization of arsenic-contaminated sludge samples from the prototype water treatment plants (in the West Bengal region) pre-loaded with the synthetic adsorbent revealed presence of hydrated iron oxide nano-particles in the form of amorphous (ferrihydrite) and acicular (goethite) iron hydroxides. The generic process utilizing adsorption and membrane separation has also been extended for decolorization of dye-bath effluents from textile industry and treatment of tannery wastewater.
