Description A detailed study has been made of the gascaps of methane in flame safety lamps. Some space is devoted to the formation of the gascap and the factors influencing it for a clearer understanding of the subject. The principle findings of the study are two-fold. First, in a flat wick lamp, the values 1, 1 ½ , 2 and 3 of the ratio H/B (H-Height of the cap and B-Breadth of the wick) correspond approximately to the methane percentages of 2.5, 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 in air. Second, about the influence of the testing flame on the size of the cap, it is seen that increases of about 18 and 47 percent in the testing flame height may bring about increases of 21 and 25 percent respectively in the cap height.
