Description The size consist of raw coal feed has direct bearing on the proper designing of commercial washeries including the auxiliary unit like crushers, screens, centrifuges and filters. Accoradingly, efforts have been made in studying the limit of size variation in the raw coal supplies earmarked for the various washeries. Part I of the present paper outlines the screen analysis of a number of run-of-mine (r.o.m.) coals tested at the individual mines and also the size analyses of seam samples crushed to below 3 inches. Some results of screen analyses analyses of r.o.m. coals crushed to below 3 inches and of seam samples collected in broad channels and subsequently crushed to below 3 inches have also been presented for comparison. Further studies relating to the possible size degradation of these coals likely to results from unavoidable falls in the process of transportation, handling and storage and from machine crushing have been conducted, and the results and presented in Part II.
