The formation of slurry is inevitable in wet washing processes which are being adopted for upgrading Indian coals. For efficient and economic operation of washing plants the fine coal and clay slimes in the circulating water are to be separated and recovered and the water is to be clarified for re-use. This can best be achieved in thickeners using flocculating agents which enhance the settling rates of solids and help to maintain a virtually closed-water circuit. Flocculating agents like starch and inorganic electrolytes are now being replaced by highly efficient synthetic polymers (polyelectrolytes), which are being economically used in different parts of the world due to their very low consumption. This paper relates to preliminary studies on the effectiveness of some of the old and modern flocculating agents on slurries produced in some of the commercial and pilot coal washing plants already in operations in India.
