Description For the sound planning of any coal washery project, it is highly important to follow up the washing scheme, evolved form laboratory investigation with actual test runs in pilot plants, simulating as far as practicable the operating conditions of a commercial washery. Such tests not only provide useful design data and valuable information regarding degradation in size of coal airing transit from collieries to the washery and handling inside the plant but also help to recover various washed products in bulk, enabling a thorough study on their carbonization, combustion and/or gasification characteristic, information on which are in-dispensable for any integrated planning. The present paper describes the results of large-scale screening-cum-washing tests carried out in a 40-t.p.h. pilot coal washery at the Central Fuel Research Institute, Dhanbad, uding raw coals which have been earmarked for supply to the Dugda Coal Washery.
