Description The chapter presents three sets of data on salinity in the Mandovi and Zuari estuaries, Goa, India. The first set gives variation in vertical stratification at Old Goa in the Mandovi during February 1997 (dry season, when runoff is negligible) during spring tide and during neap tide. These data show that stratification builds up during neaps and breaks down during springs. Such a behaviour is typical of that found in partially-stratified estuaries. The second set gives along-channel sections of salinity field in the Mandovi during October and December 1998. The third data set shows how near-surface salinity at 15 locations in the two estuaries varied during April 7-9, 1993, and August 19-21, 1993. The data set gives an indication of how salt intrudes in the two estuaries after withdrawal of the monsoon rains. On the basis of these data sets the two estuaries can be classified as monsoonal (because of the dramatic change in runoff from monsoon to dry-season), macrotidal, and partially-stratified estuaries.
