Description 6061 Al alloy-graphite particulate composites developed as antifriction materials lack inadequate bonding. In the present investigation, copper coating over graphite particles was carried out by an electroless deposition method. As is well known, the Al-Cu system undergoes liquid phase sintering. The liquid phase formed by eutectic reaction spreads into the surrounding voids of the compacts by capillary force, thus enhancing sinterability. The positive role of copper coating on the 6061 alloy matrix after sintering was apparent by WDXS mapping for Cu Kα. The results also describe changes in mechanical as well as electrical properties after such coatings, apart from the densification response.
