Description Polycrystalline zirconia fibres containing 0–20 mol% CaO were synthesized by the sol-gel technique. Gel fibres of up to about 70–80 cm length and 15–20 micrometer diameter were produced at ambient temperature from spinnable acetate sols made from zirconium oxychloride. Oxide fibres were obtained by calcining the precursor gel fibres at 1000°°C. The gel and calcined fibres were characterized by FTIR studies, differential thermal analysis/thermogravimetry, X-ray diffractometry and optical microscopy. Complete removal of the acetate groups at 800°C was confirmed by FTIR studies. ZrO2-CaO fibres were found to contain only tetragonal (t-) and cubic (c-) forms of ZrO2 after heating at 1000°C. The crystallite size of ZrO2 in such fibres showed an inverse relationship with increase in CaO-content.
