Rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) has many advantages over other insulating materials as lowest thermal conductivity, high mechanical and chemical properties at both high and low temperatures and the ability to form sandwich structures with various facer materials. Buildings around the globe consume more than 40% of the total energy generated and are a major contributor to the increased level of greenhouse gases. Effective insulation is therefore a significant contributor towards sustainable construction. Studies showed that buildings insulated with RPUF typically use 30% less energy for heating and cooling compared to other insulation materials. However, RPUF is highly flammable and generates smoke containing CO and HCN. Chemically modified RPUF is a perfect fire retardant and energy efficient material for building applications. A fire retardant composition was prepared from phosphorus-nitrogen (P-N) based additives. The fire retardancy of rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) was studied by impregnating it with various concentrations of P-N based additives composition. Optimum impregnation time, retention and density of RPUF samples with P-N composition were also studied. The morphology and fire performance of RPUF and RPUF-P-N samples were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and BS: 4735 respectively. The results showed that phosphorus-nitrogen additives composition enhances the fire retardancy of RPUF samples. |
