Description It has been shown that the current synthetic aqueous lubricants for metal cutting operation are ahead of soluble type cutting' oils in performance. The lack of information regarding their tribological behavior led to study these kind of aqueous lubricants on different conventional and non conventional tribologica1 test rigs. A comparison with diff.erent aqueous fluids has shown that the tribologica1 ~'operti~s of synthetic fluids are, superior to' soluble oils on conventional __iction and wear testers where as the semi-synthetic fluid falls in between the two. On the contrary, the cutting tests show a reverse trend. The differences in tribological'information between the two kind of tests appear to be associated with removal of material and thus relates to the importance of metal cutting in the evaluation of cutting fluids.
