Description In India, cracked furnace oil comprises mainly of unconvertedbottoms from residue conversion in hydrocracker/ FCC unit, which has undergone significant thermal cracking. The sediment content of this oil is around 0.7 -1.5 %as against the required value of 0.25 %. This furnace oil caused frequent plugging of the fuel lines and burners. High asphaltene and thermooxidatively unstable constituents cause large-scale depositsduringstorage, transportationand uses leads to ,- heavy loss of this fuel. The non-stop degradation of fumace oil causes poor combustion efficiency and fuel economy. Some additives were developed and evaluatedas candidatesfor stabilizationof these furnace oils. The furnace oil was doped with these dispersants / stabilizers in 1000-mg/literdosage. It was observed that these additives cause considerable reduction in total sedimentsalmost 10 times and in unfilterable residue by 2.5 times. Test on LAP burner in an actual furnace reveals that additives gives significant improvement in terms of combustion efficiency (15.4%), fuel economy (26.7%) and particulates in flue gases (40%). It is thus possible to improve quality of cracked furnace oil to an acceptable performance level by the help of proper additive.
