Description Heavy alkyl benzene (HAB) is produced as by-product during the preparation of linear alkyl benzene (LAB) for detergent industry. HAB generally is in the range of 6 to '10 percent of the total alkylate and consists of substituted benzenes and Naphthalenes with no poly-aromatics or olefin. HAB based metalworking soluble oil has been developed as an alternative to mineral lube oil component in metalworking fluids. Metalworking fluids based on HAB are superior in performance and provide a cost effective alternative to mineral oil based metalworking fluids. The formulation of metalworking fluids, described in this paper, consisted of heavy alkylates, emulsifier, lubricity booster, antioxidant / stabilizer, fungicides, extreme pressure additive, antirust additive, co-surfactant and coupling agent. The formulations were evaluated for physico-chemical and performance characteristics such as emulsion & thermal stability, copper-strip corrosion, iron chipscorrosion, deposit-forming tendency on hot metal surface and lubricity, etc. Oil-water micro-emulsions of these formulations showed higher stability over a wide range of temperature. Performance of formulations is found at par with the ASTM specifications. KEY WORDS: HAB, Heavy Alkyl Benzene, Metalworking Fluids, Soluble oil.
