Description The heterogeneous interaction of acetylene and acetic acid with activated carbon based catalysts containing up t() 25 weight pe.,.cent zinc acetate have been investigated in an isothermal packed bed reactor at atmospheric pressure bctween 155° -200°C. The Effect of several variables, molar feed ratio of acetylene to acetic acid, reaction temperature and the reciprocal of space velocity on the conversion and product distribution were examined. The catalysts have been characterized by means of DTA, TGA, IR, X-ray, maSs spectrometry and BET studies. Though 15 different mechanisms were postulated, the rate of reaction was most satisfactorily correlated by a mechanism of surface reaction between ionic adsorbed acetic acid and acetylene, which assumes that the rate-controlling step was the irreversible' ionic adsorption of ace tylene and acetic acid
