Description Two samples of crude oil, one a natural petroleum crude oil and the other a coal-derived liquid syncrude have been examined by 13Cand 1H n.m.r. spectrometry. From the resulting spectra, a series of average structural parameters has been derived, which allow the oils to be characterised and compared. The results can only be considered approximate, since they present an over-simplified picture of very complex mixtlues containing a wide range of components; however the method described has the advantage that the fewspectra needed can be obtained on crude material without preliminqry treatment.
