Description Oxidation of s"butyItoluene (SB1) to its hydroperoxide (ROOH) by oxygen has been studied in the presence and absence of catalysts in aqueous suspension at 80° to 116°C and 1 to 8.5 kg/cm2 O2 pressure. The oxidation rate is higher at higher pressures and the selectivity to ROOH formation is the highest when no catalyst is used. Effects of various reaction parameters have been studied inthe absence of catalyst. A reactKm temperature of 100°, SBT -water ratio of 1:2 and oxygen pressure of more than 3 kg/cm2 are found to be the most suitable for ROOH formation. Oxidation above 11.5% ROOH level leads mainly to byproducts including s-butylbenzoic acid.
