Description Synthetic esters as base fluids have shown better lubrication characteristics in comparison to mineral base oils. No adequate information is available on the influence of additives on the tribological performance of synthetic esters. Such relationships however between additive system and base fluid is highly desirable. In order to understand such relationship a study was made by synthesising complex esters using indigenous IIP-C1 catalyst. Automotive gear oil formulations were made using these complex esters as base fluids and conventional additive packages that are normally used in mineral oil formulations as additives. These finished formulations are then evaluated for physicochemical characteristics and tribological performance. The synergistic and antagonistic effects of additives with the base fluids were also studied.
