Description There is a worldwide trend to improve the quality of diesel for combating environmental pollution. A sulfur content of 0,05% wt or less in diesel is being used in many countries of the world. This sulfur level is likely to be further reduced to 50 ppmw in European countries by 2005. Keeping this worldwide trend. sulfur content of the diesel in our country too has been reduced to 0.25%wt which is likely to be further reduced to 0.05 %wt in near future, In order to meet this challenge many refineries in our country have put up diesel hydrotreating plants. the catalysts for which have been provided by foreign vendors. This paper describes the efforts put by liPand UCIL(India) for development of the catalyst and its performance data. The individual sulfur compounds were identified by GCusing sulfur selective detector (PFPD).The catalyst developed jointly gives comparable performance to a commercial catalyst for producing diesel containing 0.05 % wt sulfur or less,
