For saving the cutter-stock, It is well known that visbreaking is a useful process for converting
residues into fuel oil.This process is also being used for upgrading the bottom Of the barrel.The
-earlier 'coil visbreaking.process' has been modified to soaker visbreaking as later was fbu-ntf rf1o'i'!3
energy conserving process. In India presently all the visbreaker are running on soaker mode of
operation. Visbreaking is also used as complementary process to prepare FCC/Hydro-cracker
feedstocks. For further improvement in the soaker performance to minimize back-mixing, studies have
been performed on pilot plant Soaker is a bubble column reactor in which crude residue is allowed"\o
soak for longer time at elevated temperature. The main disadvantage of bubble column reactor is that
tf"ie continuous liquid phase is back mixed due to high velocity of gas bubbles, causing over-cracking
of the liquid part. During the present study the soaker has been sectionalized to make the flow
approaching to plug type: With' this development the over-cracking may be reduced to a maximu~
possible extent. Studies have been conducted in a soaker reactor with and without internals and also
With a slight change in the soaker geometry. In this paper an attempt has been made to show the
soaker performance, by using internals, in terms of quantity and quality of the products. It has been
observed that considerable amount of products has been_increased and quality of the products.It has been Increased and quality of the products has also been improved.Energy can also be saved with suitavle internals,if the conversions are kept same as obtained without internals.
