Description |
Information and communication technology (lCT) plays a pivotal
role in this high-tech knowledge era of the new millennium. The new
trend world over is to move towards digital collection. Two major
resources required for setting up and operating digital library collections
are:technology infrastructure and personnel. Technology infrastructure
includes computing and other equipment, Software and network
connectivity. Personnel will be required for handling various tasks
associated with the creation and maintenance of the collection. lCT
infrastructure management processes recommends the best practices for
requirements analysis, planning, design, deployment and on going
operations management and technical support of an ICT infrastructure.
Actual requirement depend on nature of the digital library collection
and 0n factors such as volume of source materials to be digitized,
metadata requirements, document formats to be supported, search and
retrieval expectations. The article provides the pragmatic approacll
towardsthe development of lCT infrastructure in transforming the
traditiollallibrary into a highly sophisticated library satisfies the present
andfuture illformation needs of all categories of information uses is all
possible fields of knowledge.
