Description |
The paper offers a solution for the direct computation of time-dependent stresses and strains in the case of uncracked prestressed concrete sections, with and without nonprestressed reinforcement. This case is a special case of a much more general problem, where composite sections, cracked or uncracked, are considered and where time-dependent as well as cyclic effects are treated. The complete direct solution of such a general problem has been developed by Al-Zaid et al. (1988). In that reference, an example for the noncomposite section is treated as a special case, and it is shown to give numerical results similar to those obtained by Ghali (1986) in a previous publication. Moreover, an example for the case of a composite cracked section is also treated to show the general application of the solution. It is not clear to this writer what is really new in the solution developed in the paper, except perhaps that different creep or relaxation functions are used. These do not change the literal form of the solution, since, as in the paper of Al-Zaid et al. (1988), the solution is based on equilibrium and strain compatibility. Perhaps Rao would be kind enough to point out the differences, if any, between his solution and the special case developed by Al-Zaid et al. Moreover, the author may want to explain how his solution can apply to a case where the section is uncracked, at initial time th but due to time dependent effects and stress redistribution, the section cracks at a later time
