Description The aim of this paper is to present a critical review of the procedures, based on the finite element method, that are being adopted to evaluate the dynamic response of ship hull structures subjected to propeller-induced excitations. The paper also examines various aspects involved in modeling the structure, excitation forces, virtual/added mass to take into account fluid-structure interaction effects. mass distribution, etc. The effect of methods of mathematical modelling of these aspects on computational efficiency as well as on reliability of results are discussed, R&D work being carried out in this area at SERC Madras is highlighted.
