Description |
Stiffness of brick masonry shear walls depends on its geometry and elastic modulaii. In this paper, a parametric study on stiffness of shear walls with openings of different sizes and position and, a probabilistic analysis of stiffness, considering the elastic modulus as a random variable, are presented. In the parametric
study, three different methods (viz; simple-to-use method, direct stiffness approach and finite element analysis) are used for estimation of stiffness and the results are compared. It has been noted that while the results of simple-to-use method and the direct stiffness approach are almost equal, they are not comparable to the results
of finite element analysis in few sample cases. This is due to that, in the first two methods, displacement compatibility is ensured only at the top and bottom of adjacent piers in horizontal direction whereas in the finite element analysis, the same is ensured at a number of points along the edges of such piers. In the probabilistic
analysis, elastic modulus of brick masonry is considered as random variable and Monte Carlo simulation technique has been used. It has been identified from the study that, for the case considered, lognormal distribution represents the variations in stiffness of brick masonry wall
