Description Opencast mines take major roll in coal production in India. Most of the coal production in India comes from open pit mines which contribute over 81% of the total production. A number of large open pit mines of over ten million tones per annum capacity are at present in operation. Opencast method of coal production is adopted due to its cost effectiveness, high recovery and comparatively better safety aspects. Raniganj coal field is one of the locations where mining predominates. There are number of mines where work was stopped before nationalization but reclamation has not been done. These may be abandoned or disused. If it is disused it can be reopened again i.e. this project will be economically feasible otherwise the only way to treat this old mine is to reclamation. In this work present status of opencast mines of Kenda area in Eastern coal field limited has been determined using GIS as tool.
