Description The stability of opencast mine slopes is important for the safe and economic mining operations. The practical approach to slope stability is guided by the basic geological data, geo-technical characteristics of the slope mass, ground water details and a good measure of engineering judgment. The paper presents in brief the slope stability studies conducted by the author indifferent Indian opencast mines in limestone and iron ore sectors. Based on the author’s experience of slope stability studies in over 30 different opencast mines, the basic recommendations and issues, which are applicable to opencast mines in Indian geo-mining conditions in general are outlined. The slope forming materials have included different types of soils and very poor to fair rock masses. The Bieniawski’s Rock Mass Rating of these rock masses have typically varied from 20 to 45. The studies broadly include the design of ultimate and working pit slopes and post failure investigations aimed at back analysis and identification of causative factors. It is observed that the slope failure problems typically occur during rainy season and the failures are mostly triggered by rain water, which infiltrates into the slope mass and builds up the pore-water pressure. The studies have revealed that judicious planning and implementation of appropriate slope monitoring and geotechnical investigation schemes can help in identifying the vulnerable slope sections, predict instabilities, evolve control strategies and even mining under unstable slope conditions.
