Description |
The concern for environment and the energy crisis in the world has drawn attention towards search for alternative sources of energy. Coal mines throughout the world release a huge amount of methane in the atmosphere. Of late, it has been realized that such methane if recovered, can serve as a useful energy resources and help us meet some energy requirements the other point that has given impetus to this idea and favoured its recovery and utilization is the safety aspect inherent in it. The gas that is released immediately prior to, during, or subsequent to underground coal mining activities through its recovery and utilization can help us overcome safety and climate change impacts issues thus, making coal mining more safer than before. The management strategy should therefore, comprise of proper planning and policy development and concerted action on the part of the government and the industry so that gainful utilization of methane can be achieved.
This paper briefly discusses coal mine methane and its prospects globally. The environmental issues associated to it and the measures adopted to minimize those issues have also been briefly discussed.
