Description |
Subsidence due to underground coal mining has been reported from almost all parts of the world and India being a major coal producer has been facing very severe problems of subsidence in most of its coalfields. The occurrence of thick coal seam at shallow depth is the main reason for the subsidence and as a result collapses have occurred in many coal mines in recent years. Subsidence phenomenon, an unwanted consequence of underground mining can cause environmental problems and damage to surface and subsurface structures. In order to protect the environment and structures form these damages, precise subsidence prediction is essential. In this paper it is intended to discuss more important developments in empirical methods based on site specific field data for predicting mining subsidence for stowed workings in Indian coalfields and their assessment through a comparative study between observed and predicted values for Jharia coalfield.
