Description From the very beginning of the industrial revolution during 1760s, coal had been the basic source of energy for the industrial development over the countries in the world; it remains the same even today in the developing countries like India. Exploring not only the resources of renewable energy but also unconventional energy decide the industrial growth and determine the prosperity of a country when its utilization is optimized subject to the intended use. In this perspective, coal bed methane (CBM) is a boon as an unconventional source of conserved fuels. Thus, it is essential to discusses about the prospect of coal bed methane as a viable source of energy that is being utilized to a great extent nowadays. Further, an attempt has been made to address the genealogy of methane during the formation of coal with special focus on the coal chemistry. The useful measures such as estimation of in-situ gas content using direct and indirect method, determination of methane sorption capacity of coal, safety aspects of mining, various geological controls over CBM, and porosity and permeability of coal have been discussed as well.
