Wide application of analytical techniques in industry and research derives from the ability to carry out accurate, reproducible analysis at very high speed. With modern computer controlled system, operation is fully automatic and results are typically delivered within minutes or even seconds. Some of the instrumental set involves costs but the benefits it provides in the long run helps us in ignoring the cost factor. Some of the analytical techniques are simple and inexpensive too which proves the importance of analytical studies. In the present paper the importance of analytical studies in management of coal combustion residues has been highlighted. This paper also reports the findings of experimental studies through a case study with regard to some common analytical techniques (e.g., XRD, SEM-EDXA, TEM, XRF, FTIR, Petrography, AAS etc.) that has been used for characterizing coal combustion residues.
